A Small Makeover

I'm 32 weeks and I have a small case of frantic nesting. Suddenly, every little plan and project I've put off must get done. Now. I think most of you can also relate to feeling like you are never satisfied with all the decor in your house. But that's the fun of it- you don't have to be satisfied, you can just keep making small changes to satisfy the decor ADD.

I didn't take a before picture of this little vignette on top of the dining room book shelf. Just imagine a pile of junk. It used to have some pretty thrifted pitchers up there that I got sick of a couple months ago and took back to the thrift store with the intent of getting new pretties to put up. But that didn't happen until yesterday. I actually went the antique market for that purpose, but of course came home with everything but objects for this space. So I just "thrifted" from other spots in my home, which turns out is just as fun to do.

I finally put up Olivia's beautiful print in a frame we already had. I love it in this spot. The buddha statue thing has an interesting story. About a year after Hurricane Katrina, Nick and I went on a group work trip to New Orleans to gut houses that had still been untouched since the flood. He found this in one of the houses, and it was one of the only things that wasn't totally molded and destroyed. The owners had left it all, so the guy in charge of our work group said it was ok for him to take. It's kind of a really sad story actually, but it's a good reminder of that trip. And the statue itself just makes me smile.

Someone has become a little obsessed with knives, and with turning any long objects into knives. Where do boys learn this stuff?

Trying to get girly.

It's time to get into gear and start making/planning/shopping for baby girl's room. Since I'm sitting here doing nothing but blowing my nose every 20 seconds, I started fabric shopping for bedding and such.

Perusing around Hawthorne Threads, I came up with a color scheme I love for right now- gray, yellow, and kind of a plum/ fuchsia shade. Not sure why this combo sticks out to me. Well, I always love yellow and gray, and I think the plum comes in because I don't really want to go the bubble gum pink route just because it's a girl, but I also don't want to banish the whole pink family. Plum is bright and bold and girly, and any other pink items she is sure to accumulate will still work with it.

Anyway, I might change my mind, but here are some options in that colorway:

I need to keep the gray option pretty neutral because we may move the kids into a room together and use that fabric to tie it all together, like for the curtains. I'm definitely loving the idea of fuchsia houndstooth.

Any thoughts?

Cincy Shopping

Maybe I should say Cincy window shopping, since I have never once bought anything from either of the stores I am telling you about. But I have been to both many times just for a little fun and inspiration. The truth is, I'm not a big shopper and there is no way I would spend the money on any of the really amazing things in these shops. But there are definitely smaller affordable items in both.

You can find Mica 12V on Vine and 12th, of all places. It's a beautiful shop that carries both local artists and world-famous designers. You can lust over Angela Adams rugs while drooling over Cincy's own Three Sheets 2 the Wind's home textiles. Everything is uber-stylish.

But my all-time favorite place for swanky eye candy is called High Street, on Reading Road. The outside of the building is one of the places Shepherd Fairey installed a mural over the summer. This shop is really for high dollar interior designers to find their goods. I could imagine David Bromstad frequenting if he lived here. I think they also have an in-house design team for hire. Anyway, I always feel like I've stepped into London or something walking around in there. And I feel like I must have snuck in, because surely they have style-standards for who they let in a place like this.

Tomorrow, I'll show you my favorite places within walking distance from our house. Hendrix and I go on a lot of walks.
